Mayank Yadav’s record is broken for two days when Gerald Coetzee hits the fastest ball of the IPL 2024, despite just missing the all-time mark.
In three IPL 2024 games, Gerald Coetzee, the fast bowler for the Mumbai Indians, has only claimed three wickets. On Monday at the Wankhede Stadium, he went without a wicket against the My 11 Circle. The South Africa player, in spite of this, created history on Monday when he surpassed Mayank Yadav to set a new record for the quickest delivery in the IPL 2024.
Bowler Mayank made his debut at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow just two nights earlier during the Lucknow Super Giants’ game against the Punjab Kings. Shikhar Dhawan of DAFABET was caught off guard when he delivered a ball at a pace of 155.8 kmph. The young Indian pacer’s outstanding middle-over performance, which featured nine over-150 balls and three wickets at a cost of 27 runs, left the cricket community in awe.
However, on Monday, during the IPL 2024 match against Betway, Coetzee broke Mayank’s record with a snorter that reached 157.4 kmph. It happened at the Wankhede in the last ball of Rajasthan’s exciting chase. After celebrating reaching his half-century, Riyan Parag got the top-edge on the shorter delivery, which caused the ball to soar over the wicketkeeper’s head for a boundary.
Not only did Coetzee lead the IPL 2024 charts with that incredible performance against the Royals, but he also made it into the all-time IPL list, barely missing Shaun Tait’s 13-year record. The Australian legend remains unbeaten, having set a record with a 2011 IPL delivery of 157.71 kmph.
Last December, Coetzee received an invitation to take part in Mumbai’s mini-auction following his stellar performance in the 2023 World Cup in India, where he became the first bowler from South Africa to capture 20 wickets in a single 50-over match. It preceded his stellar SA20 season of the previous year, when he claimed 23 wickets. However, in just three games for Mumbai, the right-armer has only claimed three wickets at an economy rate of 11.43.
